Scott Boras is Insane
This man is coming, and no rich person is safe.
It's official, Andruw Jones will hit the free agent market. Bad news for those of you who picked "Atlanta" in the "Where Will Andruw Go?" office pool. Sure the payout would have been great at 1,000 to 1, but any time you hear Scott Boras and John Schuerholtz in the same sentence, it's time to walk away.
Jones, for those keeping score at home, put up a .311/.413/.222 this year, with 26 home runs and 94 RBI. Don't get me wrong, these are good numbers (not the AVG, but everything else), and the dude plays one hell of a center field. But when you consider that in 2006, Jones put up a much better line: .363/.531/.262 with 41 home runs and 129 RBI, and that he did a better than that in '05, clearly the man has been trending down.
Which is not to say that he won't pick it up and have a monster year in '08, but Scott Boras, agent of the stars, says the bidding for Jones will start at $20 million dollars a year.
Whubuhwha?
This shit never ceases to amaze me. Here's Alfonso Soriano in 2006: .331/.560/.277, 46 HR, 95 RBI, and those numbers after two years of trending upward. He got almost $18 million a year for eight years.
So, in Boras World, two comparable players hitting free agency a year apart, and a guy who plays progressively worse gets more money after a bad year than a guy who played progressively better after a good year.
What's next? What is Alex Rodriguez going to get if Andruw Jones is getting that kind of money? Let's say he lands with the Angels, as is speculated. Will the team change its name to "A-Rod and Friends"? When is enough enough?
How much money do you think Scott Boras has in his pocket right now?
